What is Mental HEALTH?

It is the state of well-being in which the individual realizes his/her own abilities, can work with normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to his or her community.

WHAT IS A MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM?

It refers to the psychosocial, psychiatric, or neurologic activities and programs along the whole range of the mental health support services including promotion, prevention, treatment, and aftercare, which are provided by mental health facilities and mental health professionals.

WHO PROVIDE THE MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS/SERVICES?
They are the mental health providers and mental health professionals. Mental Health Providers are entities or individuals providing mental health service, whether public or private, including but not limited to, mental health professionals and workers, social workers and counsellors, peer counsellors, informal community caregivers, mental health advocates and their organizations, personal ombudsmen, persons or entities offering nonmedical alternative therapies. The Mental Health Professionals, on the other hand, are the medical doctors, psychologists, counselors, nurses, social workers, or any other appropriately trained and qualified persons with specific skills relevant to the provision of mental health services.
WHO ELSE CAN BE A MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER?

They are called the Mental Health Workers. They are trained persons, volunteers or advocates engaged in mental health promotion, providing support services under the supervision of Mental Health Professionals.

WHO CAN TRAIN AND SUPERVISE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES?
The Mental Health Professionals appropriately trained and qualified with specific skills relevant to the provision of mental health services, can implement and supervise the conduct of mental health programs.
WHAT IS THE FOCUS OF THE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES OF SFICC?

The focus of the mental health services of SFICC is the provision of preventive, compact, solution-focused and recovery-approach psychosocial interventions to individuals following a traumatic event, natural disaster, or public health emergency. It also integrates referral service as a system for linking clients to resources and to a more specialized psychological and counseling services provided by counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Only clients in the mild to moderate level of distress/emotional problems or concerns will be served. Those with marked distress or moderate to disabling or chronic level of impairment will be referred to other mental health professionals for a more specialized type of mental health services (e.g., pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, counseling, psychological evaluation).

HOW DO I KNOW THAT I NEED OR SOMEONE NEEDS to consult a mental health professional?
If you have at least one concern in any of the four indicators of mental health namely, (1) Danger, (2) Deviance, (3) Distress, and (4) Dysfunction. Danger means there is an imposed risk of danger to self or other people. Deviance means extreme mood swings, behavioral eccentricities, and unusual thinking patters. Distress means there are anxiety, insomnia, various pains and aches or emotionality. Dysfunction means your inability to perform daily functioning or everyday activities. When you feel is not right, you are overwhelmed, feeling exhausted and/or worried to a lot of things, consult a mental health advocate/worker or a mental health professional.
